Defining Love

I was talking to a girlfriend this am. Our conversation struck a nerve.
She told me how much she loves this man but couldn’t understand why he loves to hurt her. I saw myself through her eyes.
It breaks my heart.  I know it’s God reminding me to stay my own course.
I’ve spent 8 years of my life in the shoes of this girl. Many of us have!

The things I’ve seen. The life I lived. 😪If I could only save them all I would.

So many of us “love” poison.
Why does a snake bite you but we fascinate ourselves with their exotic beauty? (Paraphrased from my Pastor’s sermon last week.)
Why does cocaine kill you but “give you the greatest rush” you think you will feel?
Why does a person you love so much love to hurt you??
It’s because it isn’t love!
It’s the gamble of a challenge.
It’s safer and easier to those of us who are damaged to admire something from a distance than face the reality. It’s the fantasy of experiencing a rush or crush that makes us ignore or deny the upcoming crash.

We lust out of our insecurities and emptiness.
We fill voids temporarily and we symbolize it for love because it’s the closest thing to euphoria we have experienced in our own darkness.
It’s a feeling we are unfamiliar with but comfortable claiming it to be.
It’s a horrible way to think of love! It can and does make many bitter because of their misperception of what love is designed to be.
Love does not hurt you.
Love does not kill you.
Love only makes you better.

So if you’re with a person or infatuated with something or someone harmful just remember if it doesn’t add to your life it will take away.
And if it takes anything away that is good for you it cannot be genuine love.

“Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:9-10, 13 NLT)

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NLT)

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:23 NLT)
